Aims of the conference

MINEPS V follows previous conferences in Paris (1978), Moscow (1988), Punta del Este (1999) and Athens (2004), which have significantly helped increase gender equality in sport, improve school sport and develop UNESCO's International Convention against Doping in Sport.

The conference is aimed at reinforcing the values associated with sport, so that sport can fulfil its role as a leader in social change.

Main conference topics will include current issues of sport policy, such as combating match-fixing and corruption, under the heading "Preserving the Integrity of Sport".

Another theme on the agenda is participation in and through sport, with a focus on social inclusion. This theme covers the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the issue of girls and women in sport, with an eye to religious and cultural differences.

The third theme is promoting investment in sport and physical education, including evidence-based recommendations highlighting the socio-economic benefits of sport. Discussions under this theme are expected to focus on environmental protection, sustainability and the socio-economic aspects of such "sport mega events" as the Olympic Games and football World Cups.
